Using a piece of chewelry or chewable jewelry is in the most part, totally acceptable for children. Many chewelry designs are made for children – cute, pastel colours that kids will gravitate towards.
The thing is that when an individual has sensory or self-regulation challenges, those challenges don’t stop when they enter high school or when they turn 18.
Needing to chew to self-regulate the body is a nervous system function that isn’t outgrown. Sensory challenges may change or wane from one day to the next or one year to the next, but they will always be present in some form.
That means there is a strong need for adult chewelry! Perhaps the need is even greater than that of children as a person transitions to the adult world. Masking to try to fit into school, college or the workplace can create more stress and anxiety and increase the need to chew. The adult world is not always as accepting of neurodiversity which puts neurodiverse adults at a higher risk for mental health problems due to hiding their sensory challenges.
